ABOUT US
Thozhuvam is a Non-Government Organization founded in 2020 to safeguard the rights and welfare of pastoralists rearing indigenous cows and sheep in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, India. Its prominent aim is to protect the livestock and creating an independent demographic community with employment opportunity, for the upliftment of rural pastoral society.
According to ICAR- National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, “Bargur, Pulikulam, Kangayam, Umblachery” are the four varieties of cattle present in Tamil Nadu. Among the four, Pulikulam variety reared in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, got declined in their number and were only 58,000 in 2017. Owing to the continuous efforts of Thozhuvam, their population got increased to 90,000 in 2021. In addition, the NGO also connected more than 750 pastoralists rearing Pulikulam breed within a radius of 150km from Madurai.
“DEFINITION OF THOZHUVAM- It denotes the place of rendezvous for herd cattle. In other words, it acts as a place of protection to the cattle. The word ‘thozhuvam’ was widely been in use right from 2000 years ago in the Tamil literature, and also an inevitable one in the life of pastoralists.”
தொழுவம் தமிழ்நிலப் பகுதிகளில் தனித்துவமான மேய்ச்சல் முறையை பின்பற்றி காலங்காலமாக வளர்க்கப்படும் நாட்டின மாடுகள் மற்றும் ஆடுகளை பராமரிக்கும் மேய்ச்சல் சமூகத்தினரின் உரிமைகள் மற்றும் நலன்களைப் பாதுகாப்பதற்காக 2020இல் நிறுவப்பட்ட அரசு சாரா நிறுவனம்.
இதன் நோக்கம் பாரம்பரிய நாட்டினக் கால்நடை வளர்ப்பைப் பாதுகாத்து, அதன்வழி சமுதாயம் தற்சார்ப்பு வாழ்வியலைக் கடைபிடிக்கவும் அதன் மூலம் வேலைவாய்ப்புகளை உருவாக்கிடவும் அதன்வழி, ஆயர் கிராமியப் பொருளாதாரத்தை மீட்டிடவும் வழியமைக்க உழைத்தல்.
இந்திய வேளாண்மை ஆராய்ச்சிக் கவுன்சில் (ICAR - National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources) தமிழகத்தில் பர்கூர், புலிக்குளம், காங்கயம், உம்பளச்சேரி ஆகிய நாட்டு மாடுகள் இருப்பதாக பதிவு செய்துள்ளன. தென்மாவட்டங்களில் வளர்க்கப்படும் புலிக்குளம் கிடை மாடுகள் 2017ல் 58,000ஆக இருந்த நிலையில் தொழுவம் தொடர் முயற்சியால் தற்போது 90,000 உயர்ந்துள்ளது. மதுரையிலிருந்து 150கிலோ மீட்டர் சுற்றளவில் 750க்கும் மேற்பட்ட புலிக்குளம் கிடைமாடு பராமரிப்போரை தொழுவம் ஒருங்கிணைத்துள்ளது.
